How do I generate investment ideas?

Idea generation is one of the most interesting aspects of my professional life. Investment ideas emanate from both quantitative and qualitative runs.

Quantitatively, I run a number of screens using S&P Capital IQ, a database that gives access to both domestic and international companies. I select certain companies from these screens that meet my investment criteria for further evaluation.

Qualitatively, I read a number of publications, meet management teams, attend conferences, talk to and follow other investment managers. I select certain ideas from these sources for further evaluation.

I keep my eyes and ears open for good investment ideas. Some of the best investments in my experience have been the result of serendipity.
